One of the leading film-makers of world cinema, Youssef Chahine is often described as beyond categorisation.

From his neo-realist approach to 'Cairo Station', in which he himself appears, to the representation of the events of 1967 in 'The Sparrow' to the first of his autobiographical trilogy, 'Alexandria Why?', the NFT June 2002 'Focus On' series explored the range of styles, subjects and themes that distinguish his early career.
