LIFE AND ART: THE NEW IRANIAN CINEMA

NFT LONDON, JUNE–JULY 1999

This two-month season celebrated the artistic vibrancy of one of the most widely hailed national cinemas of the '90s.

This panorama covered more than fifty films, mostly from the last three decades of the 20th century, by some twenty directors living both in and outside Iran. Many were being shown for the first time in the UK, and were landmarks in the evolution from a modest industry into an internationally acclaimed phenomenon.

The season included a retrospective of Abbas Kiarostami in June and a focus on Mohsen Makhmalbaf in July.

Between August and October 1999 the season toured to several UK cities including Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield.
