SIGNS, TRACES AND CALLIGRAPHY

CONCOURSE GALLERY, BARBICAN CENTRE
LONDON
20 SEPTEMBER–27 OCTOBER 1995

This exhibition presents works on paper, canvas and textiles by five contemporary master calligraphers: Ahmed Moustafa, from Egypt, often called an “alchemist of letters”; Ali Omar Ermes from Libya, who seems to “paint the alphabet”; Rachid Koraichi from Algeria, who has developed a cryptographic style; Nja Mahdaoui from Tunisia, the “choreographer of letters”; and Mehdi Qotbi, from Morocco, whose works are meditative “visual incantations”.
