CHAMATKARA, MYTH AND MAGIC IN INDIAN ART

WHITELEY ART GALLERY, LONDON
29 OCTOBER–15 NOVEMBER 1996

Chamatkara is the essence of the nine universal emotions, or "rasas", which govern Indian aesthetics. This exhibition traces the idea of Chamatkara throughout history, through folk and urban interpretations, and the evolution of the contemporary visual language of India.

Featuring nearly 130 works of art by thirty-three leading artists from across India, "Chamatkara" celebrates the fusion of tradition and modernity, and the change and continuity not only in India’s visual vocabulary, but elsewhere in its society.
