CHRISTINE KHONDJI: DJINNS –
OCTOBER GALLERY, LONDON
26 FEBRUARY–21 MARCH 1998
Born in France into a mixed French-Iranian family, Khondji unleashes in her shamanic self-portraits the powerful demons or djinns that inhabit us. Here, they are exorcised, staged and bravely exposed.
Her phantasmagoric painted images of djinns, inside and around her body, contrast with the calm and peaceful character of the artist whose work is influenced by her extensive knowledge of the human body, plants, animals, religions and rituals. They reflect sources as diverse as Siyah Qalam or Munch.
