TROPENMUSEUM AMSTERDAM
24 APRIL–31 AUGUST 1997

Qanna Sambata was one of the foremost folk artists of the past few decades.

Rich in colour and movement, his paintings often depict dozens of figures mostly clad in the traditional . white chamma, or shawl, and portrayed according to classical conventions. Sambata paints the skin colour of his figures in various shades of brown to show the diversity of different peoples living in Ethiopia.
