KAMAL LAHBABI: MAQAMAT KAMALIYYA
LEIGHTON HOUSE MUSEUM, LONDON
12–25 MAY 1996
The “Maqamat Kamaliyya” or “Kamal Sessions” is the first solo exhibition in London of painted papier-mâché portraits by the Moroccan architect-turned-master-ceramicist Kamal Lahbabi.
The papier-mâché not only gives a three-dimensional feel to the works, but allows for another layer of texture to his details and scenes, tinged with nostalgia and souvenirs of the past. He also applies texts to the paintings, his own version of a traditional genre of witty Arabic rhythmic prose.
