SOHRAB SEPEHRI: THE EIGHT BOOKS (2012)
Translated by Bahiyeh Afnan Shahid
The Iranian poet and painter Sohrab Sepehri (1928–1980) is revered today for many of the things he was criticised for during his lifetime. Born and raised in the ancient city of Kashan, he was educated in Tehran and travelled widely all over the world. Sepehri belonged to the generation of ‘New Poets’ whose verse did not necessarily rhyme or have a strict metre. In this fresh translation, Bahiyeh Afnan Shahid successfully conveys the meaning, feeling and sensitivity of the Farsi original, allowing the reader to appreciate why Sepehri’s collection of poetry, ‘The Eight Books’, is one of the most popular books in Iran and has won admirers around the world.
